Shepherd's Bush Overground hole getting bigger

The work to widen the platform at Shepherd's Bush seems to be moving ahead quickly):

It was barely started last Tuesday. They only seem to be bothering with the southern half of the platform, nearest the station building, at least for now.

And it's nice to see the station finally being used for something, even if it's just as a site office:

  1. I think that they are only going to do a 4 car length starting from the ticket office end.

  2. How many cars will the station be able to take?

  3. Most (if not all) passenger services currently operating on the WLL are 3 or 4 car only.
The original build may well have been for longer trains (possibly 8 car) to provide capacity for longer trains in the future.
Once Clapham Junction is redeveloped, Southern may well be looking to run 8 cars on to the WLL, (think they'll reverse most at North Pole).

  4. The station was built for four car trains, but the northbound platform is about 6 cars long because there's a signal for southbound trains part way along it.

Normal northbound trains stop at the south end next to the station building, while trains heading south (either northbound trains reversing, or southbound trains running wrong line) need to stop at the north end of the platform, so the cab at the south end of the train is north of the signal.

It has passive provision for 8 car trains - the emergency escape footbridge at the north end of the station is a long way from the end of the platforms, with footpaths alongside the track.

  5. Has it been confirmed if Southern trains will stop here as yet?

  6. Looking at the picture with the metal fence section taken away..
I took a closer look today as I was following a frieght train heading back towards Willesden Junction and I think that from that section back to the station building is the only section that will be pushed back. More info to follow as the work progresses.

  7. General question: Out of interest, does anyone know how close/integrated/accessible the change between WLL and Central Line Stations at Shepherd's Bush will be when completed?

  8. The entrances will face each other accross the bus station, so no direct interchange, but closer than the Hammersmiths or any other out-of-station interchange I can think of.

  9. 2 or 3 sections of back wall have been taken out today (8/5/08) as seen from WLL
