Mitcham Eastfields opening May 18th-ish

View all posts about Mitcham Eastfields

The new First Capital Connect timetable gives a provisional date for Mitcham Eastfields station to open:

At the time of printing, the exact opening date of the station has not been determined, however it is anticipated that it will open on or close to 18 May 2008. Times of trains at Mitcham Eastfields (which is between Streatham and Mitcham Junction stations) are included in the tables of this booklet. However trains will not call there until the station has opened.
Handy advice in that last sentence.

So that's confirmation that FCC Thameslink trains will stop at Mitcham Eastfields - which is a result, as under an earlier plan I understand that only Southern's Victoria - Sutton - Epsom trains were going to stop there, the thinking being that the Thameslink timetable was too tight to accommodate another stop.

But Eastfielders, don't get too attached to the idea of direct trains through central London - the South London RUS recommendations for implementing Thameslink 2000 (sic) mean that Sutton/Wimbledon loop trains will in future terminate at Blackfriars. Though that said interchange at Blackfriars onto far more frequent through Thameslink trains will be pretty easy.

Further inspection of the South London RUS reveals the plan is to run a Blackfriars-Wimbledon-Sutton-London Bridge service once the loop is separated from Thameslink.

So trains to/from the Eastfields side of the loop will turn right at Tulse Hill and go to London Bridge via Peckham Rye, where there may one day be interchange with the East London Line.

On the plus side, the frequency will increase to every 15 minutes in each direction.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll admit I've yet to work my way through the final South London RUS, though I did read through the draft version for consultation.

However going by your summary of Thameslink services in 2015, at Peckham Rye - as well as the possible interchange with the ELL that you mentioned - there will also be interchange with the rerouted Thameslink trains to/from Orpington and Sevenoaks.

With a choice of trains to Victoria or London Bridge, with the latter every 15 minutes, it doesn't sound like Eastfields will get a bad deal at all.

Looks like 2nd June is going to be the big day (although it's still subject to revision apparently).

"We have been informed that Network Rail do not feel the station will be ready to open before Sunday 1 June 2008. It is therefore anticipated that First Capital Connect trains will serve this station from the start of service on Monday 2 June. This date may still be subject to revision. Please check here or on station posters before travelling"
